PROFESSIONAL BIOGRAPHY

Meadow’s impressive career spans over three decades, she has been able to hone her craft as a leader, administrator, and coach.  As such, in November 2016, Meadow made a critical decision to start CoachAbility, a sports consulting business to assist leaders, coaches, athletes, and parents to successfully navigate the sports industry.

As of 2023, Meadow resumed her coaching career at Atlantic Collegiate Academy, a new charter school in Myrtle Beach, SC. Her main coaching philosophy is centered around CoachAbility, Accountability, and team Unity with a focus on trusting the process. Meadow’s teams are characterized as disciplined, sports-person-like, and highly motivated to put in an intense effort on the floor every day!

As the former Director of Athletics at the City College of New York for nearly eight years, Meadow’s passion, competitive nature, and vision were essential qualities that bolstered her remarkable career.  Meadow’s knowledge of the CUNY conference is incredibly extensive.  Meadow instituted a “One Team, One Dream” mantra, which quickly became a philosophy amongst the 250+ student-athletes across 17 athletics teams.  Her dedication to teaching and inspiring teamwork, camaraderie, and life skills have resulted in the creation of several successful support services for student-athletes, including the “Bounce-Back” Retention Program and “G.A.M.E.S.” (Giving Athletes Motivation & Education for Success) workshops.  Under her guidance the Student Athletic Advisory Committee at CCNY flourished, bringing about many exciting and instrumental changes to the college community. Meadow’s goal of “developing the student-athlete as a total person, enhancing their well-being and empowering them to be leaders in life”, is reflected in the Coaches and Captains Retreats that she started in 2009.

Meadow came to City College after working as the Associate Athletic Director of the Recreation and intramural Program at Hunter College for nearly 17 years and as Head Women’s Basketball Coach for 13 years.  In those 13 years as the head coach, Meadow led the Hawks to eight regular-season league titles, five conference championships, four NCAA Tournament appearances, and two ECAC bids.  With these accomplishments, Meadow became the most winning women’s basketball coach in the school’s history, as well as the first coach to lead Hunter to a bid in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.

While catapulting the Hawks to a conference, regional, and national recognition as one of the premier and dominant teams in the Metropolitan area, Meadow was awarded the CUNYAC Coach of the Year three times, was named the Skyline Conference Coach of the Year, and in 2003 earned the prestigious Metropolitan Writers Association Division III Coach of the Year honor.

Meadow’s dedication to service extends far beyond the athletics department.  She served on two nonprofit Executive Boards. Meadow served on four CUNYAC Committees (Chair, Eligibility Committee; Strategic Plan Committee, Championships Committee, and Finance Committee) as well as four University Committees (Student Affairs, Student Involvement, College Search Committee, and President’s Cross-Functional Student Retention Committee).  She was a member of the NCAA Women’s Basketball National Committee (2006-2010), NCAA Division III Representative of the Atlantic Region Committee (1996-1998), and ECAC Metro NY/NJ Women’s Basketball East Region Committee (1996-1998).  Her affiliations include the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, National Intramural Recreation Sports Association, National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators, and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

Meadow is a native of New York City and earned her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education (1987) at Oneonta State College, where she had a solid playing career in basketball and softball.  She earned her M.S. Ed. in Recreation Administration from Lehman College in 1996.

MY STORY

I recall my first coaching opportunity in 1979, as a high school rookie, I coached the CYO girl’s 5th and 6th-grade basketball team at St. Joan of Arc, in Queens NY to a championship victory. Debbie, who eventually went on to a successful college career, was the most dominant player on the team. It would have been really easy to let her take every shot and destroy the other teams.  Yet, even at that early stage in my coaching career, I learned that it wasn’t all about winning, but more about getting everyone involved, so everyone felt a part of the “elation of victory” or the “agony of defeat”.  At that time, I didn’t realize then that I was building young people’s self-confidence, but I did recognize that the girls always competed to have fun.

For most, Christmas is their favorite day of the year. However, my favorite day was and still is October 15th, the first official day of basketball season. On October 15, 1982, during my junior year of high school, I remember vividly having my new leather Adidas high tops with blue stripes laced up and ready to go, when it was announced that we did not have a head coach and may have to cancel the season. Wow, talk about disappointment! Canceling basketball was equivalent to canceling Christmas for me.

As I have done so many times in my career, my leadership skills and determination took over and with much persuading – I convinced the girl’s volleyball coach to be the head basketball coach. Although Coach R’s basketball knowledge was slim to none, she saved the season and gave me an opportunity to coach the team behind the scenes. I developed practice plans, organized team bonding activities, learned valuable life lessons through adversity and helped lead the team to the PSAL playoffs.  My career was defined during that season, I knew I wanted to be a coach forever!

Fast forward to 1988, as a Program Director of the YMCA of Greater NY in Brooklyn, I learned the true meaning of group dynamics as well as the value of team building and how it can have a positive impact on individuals that are united for a common cause. Since then, I have conducted hundreds of leadership retreats, team building activities, and character education sessions, as well as facilitated group dynamic workshops that have changed 1000’s of student’s lives in the New York City area.

Over the years, my passion for coaching has expanded beyond the reach of student-athletes to include leaders, coaches, and parents.  As a college athletic administrator for more than 25 years, I used those same principles I learned as a basketball coach to build successful programs, enhance the skills of administrative staff and to coach the coaches. My goal is to serve as a change agent and to continue to assist leaders, coaches, athletes and parents to reach optimal levels of success.
